Background of the Study

Pain management in pediatric nursing is essential for ensuring comfort and improving recovery outcomes in children. While pharmacological interventions such as analgesics are commonly used, non-pharmacological pain management strategies are increasingly being recognized for their effectiveness, especially in managing mild to moderate pain (Omokhodion et al., 2023). Non-pharmacological strategies, such as distraction techniques, guided imagery, music therapy, and relaxation exercises, offer a holistic approach to pain management and are often used in combination with pharmacological treatments.

In Yobe State, where healthcare facilities may face resource constraints, non-pharmacological strategies may provide an accessible and cost-effective means of improving pain management in pediatric patients. However, the extent to which these strategies are utilized by pediatric nurses in the region is unclear. This study seeks to assess the use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies by pediatric nurses in Yobe State, evaluating their effectiveness and identifying factors influencing their use.

Statement of the Problem

While there is growing interest in non-pharmacological approaches to pain management, pediatric nurses in Yobe State may face challenges in integrating these strategies into routine care. Factors such as a lack of training, cultural beliefs, and the availability of resources may limit the adoption of these strategies. This study will explore the use of non-pharmacological pain management techniques in pediatric nursing and identify barriers and facilitators to their implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies by pediatric nurses in Yobe State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological pain management techniques in pediatric care.
  3. To identify barriers and facilitators to the use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies in Yobe State.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent do pediatric nurses in Yobe State use non-pharmacological pain management strategies?
  2. How effective are non-pharmacological pain management strategies in reducing pediatric pain in Yobe State?
  3. What factors influence the use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies by pediatric nurses in Yobe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric nurses in Yobe State do not consistently use non-pharmacological pain management strategies.
  2. Non-pharmacological pain management strategies are effective in reducing pain in pediatric patients.
  3. Barriers such as lack of training and resources negatively influence the use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric nurses in public healthcare facilities across Yobe State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews. Limitations include the potential lack of generalizability to private healthcare facilities and variations in practice across different hospitals.

Definitions of Terms
